Los Angeles - The British insurance market Lloyd's of London has gone
to court in Los Angeles over singer Michael Jackson's cancelled
concerts in the British capital. The insurer accused the
Californian concert promoter AEG Live and Jackson's estate of fraud and
wants a claim for a payout against it dismissed, the internet
celebrity news website Tmz.com reported Monday. Lawyer Howard
Weitzman, representing Jackson's estate, said, 'This legal action is
nothing more than an insurance company trying to avoid paying a
legitimate claim by the insured.' In its suit filed Monday,
Lloyd's wants the court to declare that it does not have to pay out for
the cancelled This Is It tour. The British insurance market reportedly
insured Jackson's comeback, consisting of dozens of dates at London's
O2 arena in 2009 for 17.5 million dollars. The insurer argued
that Jackson and AEG had withheld important information on the state
of the singer's health. It said Jackson did not reveal he was taking
numerous medicines, including the anaesthetic Propofol. Lloyd's wants the court to declare the contract void. Jackson, 50, died of an overdose of Propofol on June 25, 2009, shortly
before the series of concerts in London was due to begin. His doctor Conrad Murray has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and was due to stand trial later this year.
